Resources for Refugees and Displaced Persons Worldwide:

IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) and Asylum Seekers:

About 22 million persons are internally displaced worldwide, according to USCR's most conservative estimate, contained in the World Refugee Survey 2000. This number continues to rise. The number of internally displaced jumped nearly 25 percent during 1999 - a dramatic increase of over four million people.

We at the Gena Foundation believe the right to asylum is a matter of life and death and cannot be compromised. In our work to stop human rights abuses in countries around the world, we seek to address the root causes that force people to flee. We also advocate for greater protection and welfare for refugees and IDPs and for an end to the abuses they suffer when they reach supposed safety.

We have several programs that are designed to help asylum seekers and displaced people currently in the United States.

GENA Immigration and Human Rights Program:

The Gena Foundation helps to provide professional legal representation for immigration-related matters. The program assists immigrants and their families from ethnically diverse backgrounds to achieve stability in the United States by providing assistance in securing competent, culturally sensitive, and low-cost immigration-related services. The program also assists other service providers and community members to do the same through training, education, and advocacy.

East African refugees and immigrants face daily challenges as they establish new lives in the United States. These challenges stem from both unfamiliarity with American cultures and the lack of knowledge among the public about challenges faced by East Africans newcomers. This sometimes poses added obstacles to newcomers’ desire and ability to integrate into American society.

The Gena Foundation serves as a welcoming presence as well as a bridge for dialogue and education. Through our programs, we seek to empower Sudanese and East African Community; giving hope for their future and helping them quickly become self-sufficient, productive members of their communities in their new homeland.

GENA Multilingual Information and Referral:

Implemented to extend the benefits of Gena Foundation extensive knowledge of refugee and immigrant populations, its familiarity with community resources throughout Washington D.C, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. In this program the Gena Foundation provides phone line or on-site translation for English, Arabic, and East African Languages to help refugee’s communication with organizations for help in employment, immigration, medical, or other matters.

If you are or know someone needing these services the Gena Foundation may be able to help. Please contact us at info@genafoundation.org
